Belur also known as the Dakshin Banaras or Southern Banaras is situated
on the banks of Yagachi river in the state of Karnataka. This serene
place is famous for its exquisite temples, among them the most well
known is the magnificent Hoysala Temple Complex. The Chennakeshava
temple here was completed in 1116 by Hoysala Vishnuvardhana to commemorate
his victory over the Chola. The temple took 103 years to complete.
The facade of the temple is filled with intricate sculptures and
friezes-with no portion left blank.
Chennakesava
Temple - The temple is a remarkable work of craftsmanship
and the sheer detail of the work is phenomenal. The statues of the
princesses and the gods transport one to a bygone era. The giant
pillars inside are an example of Hoysala architectural excellence.
One of the pillars of the temple actually revolves if pushed. The
quiet serenity of the temple is poignant.
Shantala
Devi - On the smooth circular platform, stands the sculpture
of the beautiful Shantala Devi, queen of King Vishnuvardhana. The
delicacy and attention to the tiniest details here are extraordinary.
Each feature, bangle, strand of hair is carved with care.
Madanikas(Bracket Figures) - The four famous bracket
figures on the ornate ceiling have been inspired by Shantala Devi's
beauty. One sculptured beauty communicates with a pet parrot whose
tail is peacock-like while another wring water from her long hair.
The drops collected on hair-ends are also visible. All the 650 elephants
charging on the ornament around the walls outside are different
from each other. The 38 Bracket figures on the walls are beautiful,
contemplative and amorous women.
Halebid
Halebid
is located about 32 kms from Hassan and 16 Kms east of Belur. The
little town of Karnataka was the capital of the Hoysala Kingdom
in the 12th and 13th centuries. On a clear day you can have a glimpse
of the giant Gomateshwara statue at Sravanabelgola looming in the
distance. It was also known as Dwarasamudra-gateway to the sea -
indicating the numerous water bodies that must have been there at
the time.
The
most remarkable monument in Halebid is Hoysaleswara Temple, which
actually comprises of two temples standing on a single platform.
It is said that it took about 90 years to construct these temples
and are still incomplete. Built in 1121 A.D, the interior of the
temple is filled with detailed friezes and sculptures depicting
scenes narrated in Mahabharatha and Ramayana. Two massive Monolithic
bulls are also carved inside the temple. The second temple is the
Shantaleswara Temple.
